- as published in the Spectrum / Hurricane, Utah - William Douglas "Doug" Haws, 79, cherished husband, brother, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on May 30, 2014. He was born on October 6, 1934 in Panguitch, Utah to William "J" and Myrtle Sargent Haws. He married his high school sweetheart and best friend, Thelma "Maxine" Orton on June 17, 1955 in the St. George, Utah Temple. Doug graduated from Utah State University with a B.S. degree in Range Management. He worked for the U.S. Forest Service as a District Forest Ranger for 25 years in many regions including Cedar City, Logan, Randolph, Utah, Paris, Idaho and Afton, Wyoming. Doug was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and loved missionary work. Doug was raised around horses and it proved to be his major hobby throughout his life. He competed himself in many rodeo and racing events and trained many young riders while also being a well-respected judge. He was a member of the American Quarter Horse Association, the Pinto Horse Association, Utah Quarter Horse Hall of Fame, Pinto Horse Hall of Fame, and was a President of the World Champion Cutter Racing Association. Doug created the Early Thaw Horse Show Circuit in Hurricane that eventually became one of the largest equestrian events in the region. He moved his family from Afton to Parker, Colorado in 1982 and worked in the United States and internationally as the Company Safety Director for Grant Norpac Exploration Co. until his retirement in 1993. Not one to ever be idle, he took up the hobby of wood work. One of his specialties was inscribing names in wood and making decorative shelves. Doug would cut, glue and sand and Maxine would paint many of these items which they gave to newly married couples and as baby gifts. Many family members have these special memories hanging on their walls or on their tables. He also loved to cook. His collection of Dutch ovens became so extensive he finally had to purchase a trailer to store them all. If you were ever lucky enough to be invited to eat his cooking, you would always go away with a full stomach and a smile. Doug will be missed by all who were fortunate to know him. He was daring, persistent and had a tireless work ethic. His kindness, generosity and compassion forever touched everyone he met. They were blessed with four children: Michael Douglas (Rita) Haws, Kemmerer, Wyoming; Mitchell James (Kerry) Haws, Austin, Texas; Kim (Howard) Hampton, Morrison, Colorado; and Tamara Priggemeier, Hurricane, Utah. He is survived by his wife; four children; grandchildren: Brandi Olson, Travis Haws, Thomas Haws, Matthew Haws, Trey Quinn, Tyra Quinn, Jasmine Priggemeier and Tara Priggemeier; and great-grandchildren: twins, Emma and Gavin Olson. He is also survived by his brother, Don Ipson and sister, Mary Worthen. He was preceded in death by his mother and father; sister, Minnie Johnson; brother, Kay Sargent; and brother-in-law, J. Frank Worthen. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. in the Hurricane Utah Stake Center, 650 South, 700 West, where friends may call, Tuesday, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. Interment will be at 4:00 p.m. in the Panguitch, Utah Cemetery.
